Kupuna SAM KAAI of Kaupo, Maui once said “...you know in the old language of Hawaiʻi the word for family was ʻ āina.”  From this land; back to this land; we are this land. ʻ Āina Aloha Hawaiʻi                                                            

ʻike ʻ āina – know your family
mālama ʻ āina – take care of your family
aloha ʻāina – love your family ​

ʻĀina  was and is the way of life of the people of Hawaiʻi. ʻ Āina are not only blood relations but extended to all family and hanaʻi family - kuamoʻ o. Genealogies were learned and recited to show connection to the ancestors and their mana.
 
Kūpuna are our “Living Treasure”...It is our kūpuna who hold the wisdom of the recent past and our keiki ʻo kaʻāina - children of this land, the family, who are the vessels of the future. THERE IS NO FUTURE WITHOUT A PAST; AND BOTH ARE HERE IN THE NOW.  Our kūpuna are the ones who keep foundations alive through their teachings.  Generation after generation primary structure is based on Traditional Comprehension.  It is vital that we take the time to mālama - care for, our kūpuna. Seek your ʻĀina Kupuna, source of your family. Learn their manaʻo kept from generation to generation for you:
