Moʻ oleloʻ o Kūkaniloko

Picture`ohia lehua melemele -na Kalimapau

moʻ olelo. Story, tale, history, tradition, legend, journal, record, article; minutes, as of a meeting.
MARY KAWENA PUKUI & SAMUEL H. ELBERT HAWAIIAN DICTIONARY
Hawaiian-English  English-Hawaiian

moʻ olelo- traditional comprehension. Having no written language, our oral traditions have been handed down from generation to generation. Moʻ olelo is never changing, ever evolving through storytelling, chants, dance, and all other traditional cultural practices.  Mana is the spirit, the life force we carry within our soul.

Hawaiian Proverbs & Political Sayings Collected, Translated and Annotated by MARY KAWENA PUKUI
‘Ōlelo No‘eau... Hawaiian Proverb...#1200
‘Ike aku, ‘ike mai, kōkua aku, kōkua mai; pela iho la ka nohona ʻohana.
Recognize and be recognized, help and be helped; such is family.
Family life requires an exchange of mutual help and recognition.

Kupuna SAM KAAI of Kaupo, Maui once said “...you know in the old language of Hawaiʻi the word for family was ʻ āina.”  From this land; back to this land; we are this land. ʻ Āina Aloha Hawaiʻi
ʻike ʻ āina – know your family
mālama ʻ āina – take care of your family
aloha ʻāina – love your family

ʻĀina  was and is the way of life of the people of Hawaiʻi. ʻ Āina are not only blood relations but extended to all family and hanaʻi family - kuamoʻ o. Genealogies were learned and recited to show connection to the ancestors and their mana.

Kūpuna are our “Living Treasure”...It is our kūpuna who hold the wisdom of the recent past and our keiki ʻo kaʻāina - children of this land, the family, who are the vessels of the future. THERE IS NO FUTURE WITHOUT A PAST; AND BOTH ARE HERE IN THE NOW.  Our kūpuna are the ones who keep foundations alive through their teachings.  Generation after generation primary structure is based on Traditional Comprehension.  It is vital that we take the time to mālama - care for, our kūpuna. Seek your ʻĀina Kupuna, source of your family. Learn their manaʻo kept from generation to generation for you:
ʻ o wai ʻ oe na wai ʻ oe   who are you?  whose child are you?   mai ma nei ... listen so you can see...eō

"e kūkaʻawe i nā kapu o Kūkaniloko nō ka mea aloha nō hoʻi kākou iā lākou i nā kau a kau..."
“to guard the kapu of Kūkaniloko because we love them for all time…”
