ūkaniloko Community Clean up

A Honolulu Star-Bulletin article in 1962 reads:

Wahiawa Hawaiian Club See[k]s Data on 12th Century Heiau...
A project of immense proportions has been undertaken by the Wahiawā Hawaiian Civic Club – the clearing and maintenance of the heiau at Kūkaniloko…Saturday, Aug. 25, [1962] for the first scheduled clean-up. At the present time the area is completely overgrown with tall weeds and Hilo grass, hiding from view rock formations and location of the sacred birthstone…

The Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā (HCCW) families came out for a full day of work on the first scheduled "Kūkaniloko Community Clean-up day on Saturday, August 25th, 1962".  Parents and children alike worked side by side to clean the invasive Hilo grasses and weeds. It was a memorable busy day of very hard work. The aunties prepared lunch up on the pathway easement. After lunch, back to work. At the end of the day, everyone gathered at one of the HCCW member's house to give thanks and celebrate their efforts with pāʻina.

A full day of work for the members of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawa. After clearing the invasive grasses and weeds, new coconut trees were planted.

In the 1980's, twenty years later, the HCCW coconut grove flourished. UPDATE: Unfortunately, our last remaining 7 coconut trees planted by our 1960 Kūpuna were removed from Kūkaniloko Birth Site on July 17th, 2024 because of infestation by the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB). Auwē! Auwē! Auwē!

The families of Wahiawā and Waialua began cleaning Kapuahuawa Kūkaniloko alongside the Daughters of Hawaii on February 22, 1925.  Following the war, travel to Kūkaniloko became difficult for those who lived far from the site.  In 1950, The Daughters of Hawaii passed on Official Stewardship of Kūkaniloko to the Wahiawa Hawaiian Civic Club (established on June 15, 1935).  On November 10, 1960 following Statehood, reorganization established the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā. Monthly 3rd Saturday Kūkaniloko Community Clean-up days from 9 am until 12 noon continue this HCCW 64 year tradition  We welcome the entire Community of O‘ahu to come to assist.  Families, friends, schools, scouts, businesses, nonprofits, other clubs, kupuna and makua alike with their keiki come to work.  If you would like to join us, please go to "Contact Us" here on our website and let us know that you would like to come out to help. Volunteers must be coordinated by and work alongside HCCW members to
malama  ‘āina Kūkaniloko. Mahalo, you are appreciated.  Aloha nō...

Should you and your family and friends come out to clean with us at
Kūkaniloko, may we suggest:
  1. Papale (hats), gloves, bug repellent, and your favorite yard tools - weed whackers/gas - are appreciated.
  2. Please bring a First Aid Kit; and be prepared should anyone in your group have allergies to grasses or shrubs.
  3. There is "no designated parking area". You must park your vehicles on the Northbound or Southbound shoulders of Kamehameha Highway.
  4. There is no running water onsite.  Please bring water to drink; water to wash up; and water for our plants growing onsite. Thank you.
  5. There are no restrooms.  We do have a clean Chemi-toi unit nearby on the easement road.
  6. You are welcomed to bring lunch for your family and friends to enjoy when you are done.
